The Anycubic Kobra Max is a high-performance FDM 3D printer with a massive build volume of 400 x 400 x 450 mm. Actually, it’s one of the biggest FDM 3D printers in its price range. Apart from that, the Kobra Max boasts a decent set of functions that ensure smooth operation and impressive printing results. The printer comes semi-assembled with a detailed instruction, so the assembly process does not take long.

The machine features the proprietary Anycubic LeviQ auto bed leveling system with a strain gauge which uses the nozzle to probe the build plate at 25 points, and creates a leveling map. You do not have to manually level the bed, but you can adjust the Z-axis height in the menu, if needed. The system efficiently calibrates the bed, compensating for any unevenness, which is extremely important for large-scale prints to ensure proper first layer adhesion. The build plate made of carborundum glass heats up to 90 °C and provides even heat distribution, strong adhesion, and easy print removal.

Other useful features of the Anycubic Kobra Max are filament runout detection and print resume function. Thanks to the silent stepper motors, the machine is rather quiet with the operating noise level not exceeding 60 dB.

Print quality

The Anycubic Kobra Max can print layers at the minimum height of 50 microns. If you build really large models, it makes sense to increase the layer thickness to save time. One more useful tip for printing big is to switch to a larger size nozzle than the standard 0.4 mm. The reinforced aluminum frame, the bowden extruder setup, and the Z-axis powered by two motors and two lead screws, and supported by a pair of rods, reduce wobbling and make for consistent precise results even at high printing speed.

The Kobra Max is equipped with a bowden type dual-geared extruder and a Volcano style hotend with two cooling fans and a 0.4 mm nozzle, heating up to 260 °C, which allows printing with the most popular consumer-grade filaments. Despite its bowden extruder, the printer shows good results printing with flexible materials, like TPU. The maximum print speed can reach 180 mm/s and the average speed recommended by the manufacturer is 80 mm/s.

Materials

Thanks to the nozzle temperature of 260 °C, the Anycubic Kobra Max prints with a variety of consumer plastic filaments, including PLA, TPU, PETG, and ABS. The carborundum glass build plate heats up to 90 °C and ensures strong first layer adhesion.

The printer is an open system which means you can utilize third-party 1.75 mm filaments.

Build volume

The printer comes with the Ultimaker Cura software for both Windows and macOS. Other popular slicers, like Repetier-Host or Simplify3D, are also supported, so you can prepare the model in the slicer you are used to working with. The ready-to-print G-Code file can be uploaded to the printer from a microSD card (recommended by the manufacturer) or directly from the PC via a USB connection.
