The BigDelta WASP 12MT is one of the highest commercially available 3D printers. It is 7m wide and 12m tall. It is part of a research project on building low-cost sustainable houses with zero-mile, locally-available materials.
This is a delta-style house 3D printer composed of 6-meter-long modular arms. By moving only the extruder, the delta design reduces energy consumption and the wear of the hardware. Other components have a maximum length of 3m for easier transportation. The electronics can be powered by solar panels. Thus, the printer works on both 220 and 60 volts. It employs three counterweights to balance the whole system and minimize power consumption.
The BigDelta WASP withstands up to 200kg. This means it can work with a considerable quantity of material. However, the company strongly suggests working with a maximum weight of 50 kg for lower vibrations and higher printing accuracy.
The machine can be used for printing houses and restoring archaeological sites at low costs. For example, the production cost of a 2.7 x 5m wall made with 40 tonnes of material is only €48 (energy cost included). Read on for an in-depth review.
The BigDelta WASP 12MT prints as fast as 400 mm/s. Depending on the material load on the extruder, it can reach different speeds. The acceleration is inversely proportional to the extruder weight. In order to increase the acceleration, you might use external material feeding pumps.
The BigDelta WASP 12MT is capable of printing fluid-dense locally-found materials. This means it can print with a natural mixture of water, soil and vegetable fiber found on the construction ground. This makes for a zero-mile, sustainable production. The machine can also print with technical mixtures composed of earth-based materials, cement, lime-based mixtures, blown materials, polystyrene, and more.
Despite its broad material compatibility, the extruder has been designed to work perfectly with long-fiber material mixtures.
The build area is Ø 19.7 x 39.4 ft (Ø 6 x 12 m).
