CraftBot Flow and CraftBot Flow XL are professional single extrusion 3D printers produced by CraftUnique. They are part of the so-called CraftBot Flow generation, which also includes the CraftBot Flow IDEX and IDEX XL dual extrusion 3D printers. The CraftBot Flow series is inspired by both the award-winning CraftBot 3 and CraftBot PLUS and user feedback. Unlike the previous generation, it comes with a set of useful upgrades, including redesigned hotends, a reinforced steel frame with double-shell configuration, and a new motherboard powered by a Raspberry Pi engine.

Sturdy, stable and durable, the CraftBot Flow single extruder 3D printers come fully assembled, ready to print right out of the box. Compact and with a large printing area, the CraftBot Flow and Flow XL only differ in their build volume. Specifically, the standard Flow features a print area of 300 x 200 x 250 mm, while the XL version has twice the height of its smaller counterpart, benefiting from an overall build area of 300 x 200 x 500 mm.

Apart from the size difference, the two printers come packed with a thoughtful feature-set. The automatic XY calibration system and the semi-automatic electronically-aided bed-leveling mechanism simplify the calibration process granting higher printing accuracy. The integrated filament monitoring system and the pause & resume function minimize the risk of printing failures caused by material issues and power outages, making for a seamless 3D printing experience. The multilayered heated bed has been designed to provide both strong adhesion and easy print removal. The all-metal hotend prevents filament jamming while providing high-quality prints.

Thanks to their reliability, accuracy and ease of use, these plug-and-play FDM 3D printers are a good pick for both newbies and seasoned users. They are ideal for daily use in a variety of industries, including engineering, rapid prototyping, industrial design, small-scale manufacturing, and machinery. Continue reading our complete review.

Print quality

The CraftBot Flow and Flow XL are professional FDM 3D printers that can print layers at 50 microns with an XYZ accuracy of 12.5x12.5x5 microns. They let you produce parts with smooth exterior surfaces at a print speed of up to 200 mm/s. The all-metal hotends also contribute to the high print quality achievable.

The extruder module comes integrated with the filament monitoring system, which makes for smooth filament dosage and less jam. The pause and resume option is a killer-feature in case of power interruption. In addition, it lets you produce multicolored parts by safely switching from a color to another when printing.

The CraftBot Flow and Flow XL come with a single 0.4-mm nozzle, giving you the best balance between speed and detail.

The printers adopt firm extruded aluminum profiles along the Z-axis. The print head runs on linear rails, which makes printing reliable, fast and precise.

The CraftBot Flow and Flow XL 3D printers adopt a direct drive single extruder with an operating nozzle temperature of up to 300°C. Thanks to the 300°C all-metal hotend, they are able to print with both standard and specialty filaments. In particular, they can process PLA, ABS, PET, Nylon, Carbon-fiber reinforced composites, wood, brass, and many other materials.

The CraftBot Flow and Flow XL are equipped with a heated print bed, which makes them suitable for printing with ABS-type materials. The bed can heat up to 110°C. It is composed of metal, tempered glass and Kapton sheets. The upper plate is flexible, making for easy print removal.

To ensure high reproducibility, we recommend installing an enclosed print chamber. This way the print quality would not be affected by temperature fluctuations as a result of drafts and other factors.

The CraftBot Flow and Flow XL feature an open filament material system. This means they can print with any type of 1.75 mm filament, providing you with a wide choice of materials and design possibilities.

Build volume

The build area of the CraftBot Flow is 11.8 x 7.9 x 9.8 inches (300 x 200 x 250 mm mm). It lets you print a variety of medium-to-large objects. The extended build volume of the CraftBot Flow XL, which measures 11.8 x 7.9 x 19.7 inches (300 x 200 x 500 mm), increases your printing capabilities. Then, if you need to print large objects, the XL version is your choice.

Printer controls

The Flow printers can be controlled via the built-in 5-inch color touchscreen. Each device features a responsive web interface with a simple control option that can be connected to a computer via an intranet connection.

Both machines feature a 4GB internal storage for standalone printing. They also have a built-in camera and an LED status indicator. The integrated Raspberry Pi enables future upgrades.

The printer comes bundled with the proprietary CraftWare software but is compatible with 3rd-party slicing programs as well. The printer software supports G-code, STL, and OBJ files. It runs on Windows 7 and above, OS X and Linux.
