The myCobot 280 Pi designed by the Chinese-based Elephant Robotics company is one of the world’s most compact and lightweight 6-axis robotic arms. The device belongs to , alongside myCobot 280 M5Stack, myCobot 280 Jetson Nano, and myCobot 280 for Arduino models. All the four modifications share the same mechanical construction, with the key difference in the hardware, or, more precisely, the processor the model is based on; and, consequently, some variations in operation, capabilities, and application scenarios.

The cobots from the lineup weigh only 850 grams, with the maximum load capacity of 250 grams and the working radius of 280 mm. They are all Linux-compatible, have built-in ROS and Python support, and feature Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Elephant Robotics myCobot 280 Pi is based on Raspberry Pi 4B mainboard featuring a 64-bit 1.5 GHz 4-core CPU that runs on the open source Ubuntu 18.04 software platform. The end of the arm houses the ESP32-based M5STACK Atom development board with a 5 x 5 RGB LED matrix panel, additional GPIO pins, an IR sensor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, a programmable button, and a USB-C port. The arm end is equipped with a Lego-compatible connector that expands the cobot’s customization opportunities and allows for quick and easy installation of multiple end effectors, including grippers, suction pumps, sensors, cameras, and much more.

Processing quality

Six high-performance servo motors of myCobot 280 Pi provide quick response and smooth rotation of the six joints with the repeatability of ±0.5 mm which is surprisingly good for such an affordable consumer device. This makes the cobot suitable for a wide application range not limited only to home use.

Due to its open source platform and versatility, myCobot finds a use in scientific research or medical labs. It can also become an indispensable helper for anyone in need of a “third hand” in their activities — like a photographer, for example.

Robot controls

There are several ways of programming myCobot 280 Pi.

You can use myBlockly visual coding tool, similar to any block-based programming interfaces, like Scratch, for instance. This is a great and simple way to make first steps in programming for beginners and kids.

More advanced users can connect an external keyboard and a display to take advantage of the opportunities Python and ROS provide for building numerous customized applications.

Finally, you can use the simplest drag-and-teach method to show the cobot the required succession of moves. Here again we spot the difference between the four versions of the 280 series. myCobot 280 M5Stack with its built-in screen can operate independently, while the Raspberry Pi and Jetson Nano models require an external display. The Arduino version needs a computer connection for operation.

The Raspberry Pi 4B board provides wide connectivity options. It is equipped with 2 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0 ports, 2 x microHDMI ports for external monitor connection, and a 40-pin GPIO interface.
