MiniMax 3D printer is an entry-level device produced by Maker’s Tool Works. It is a basic and cheaper version of the previous MendelMax 3, including all its core features and metal construction. It is equipped with E3D V6 hot end and a Borosilicate glass heated bed. The bed sizes are 200 x 230 x 200 mm. The plate is automatically leveled via a dedicated system offering easier printing experience.
The company provides the Deluxe Upgrade Kit, a powerful yet inexpensive upgrade that adds some useful extras to the printer. It includes a GLCD controller, spool mount, cable carrier, Gooseneck Lamp, extra cooling fans, a roll of PLA filament, and more.
The Minimax is sold in two versions: the full printer kit and the motion platform kit. The former is strongly suggested for newbies. The latter is suitable for anyone who already has a 3D printer and wants to upgrade it. The motion kit provides all components necessary to build the basic Minimax, the motors, and the glass bed. Other parts, including electronics, extruder, power supply, and heated bed, should be reused from another printer. Find out more in our review.
The Minimax is an FDM 3D printer that’s been used to print a wide variety of models. Have a look at the finished products pictured below to get an idea of its printing capabilities.
One user 3D printed a custom holder for his motorcycle.
The Minimax is an FDM 3D printer that can print layers at different heights. It has no predefined limit. The company recommends printing within a range of 100 - 320 microns. If you have enough printing experience, you can even print at 20 microns. An optional nozzle might be required for printing at larger heights. According to the resolution you choose, the surface finish might be more or less smooth.
The Minimax has a 0.4 mm nozzle, giving you the best balance between speed and detail.
The print head runs on aluminum, V-slot linear extrusion profiles through polycarbonate bearing wheels. This bare-bones sturdy design enables smooth and quiet operation. It also ensures increased durability, higher precision and makes the printer lightweight and effective, all characteristics that are desirable in a 3D printer.
Minimax prints with PLA, ABS and exotic materials.
The extruder comes with a fan for printing with PLA-type materials. By cooling the model down, it reduces warping, stringing and, generally, makes for higher quality prints. The high-torque motors provide fast and reliable performance.
You might even print a cooling fan upgrade for the MTW Minimax itself.
The Minimax has a heated print bed, which makes it suitable for printing with ABS-type materials.
To ensure high reproducibility, we recommend installing an enclosed print chamber. This way the print quality would not be affected by temperature fluctuations as a result of drafts and other factors.
The Minimax prints with 1.75 mm filament, providing you with a wide choice of materials.
The build area of 7.9 x 9.1 x 7.9 inches (200 x 230 x 200 mm) lets you print interesting parts in one piece.
The printer is controlled via PC. You can comfortably tether the printer to your computer via USB for transferring the printing models.
The printer comes with a user-friendly MatterControl Host software. It is compatible with Slic3r software and works with STL 3D models. The software is available for Microsoft Windows.
Power cord not included.
