The PowerSpec Ultra is an FDM 3D printer targeted to hobbyists and makers alike. It shows a fully enclosed metal case, which keeps the printing temperature constant, making it suitable for printing with ABS-type materials. It ships mostly assembled, you’ll just have to install the acrylic door and hood and start printing. The PowerSpec Ultra is a budget version of the Flashforge Creator Pro, which is, in turn, a replica of the MakerBot Replicator 2.

The PowerSpec Ultra is a dual-extrusion 3D printer able to print with two different materials and colors simultaneously within a print area of 226 x 145 x 150 mm. It is also capable of printing with soluble support material. It comes integrated with an LCD touchscreen for more convenient use. The transparent door and the off-blue interior LED lighting let you constantly check the printing status. The device supports an optional Wi-Fi module.

The 3D printer has been used to print a wide range of models and prototypes. Read on for a deeper review and some useful examples.

Print quality

According to the producer, the PowerSpec Ultra is an FDM 3D printer that can print layers at 100 microns. However, some users state that it can even print at 40 microns. The enclosed print chamber along with the aluminum bed covered in polyamide film improves printing accuracy and reliability, especially when printing with ABS.

For example, this ABS-made red octopus shows decent print quality and an acceptable resolution.

The print head runs on rods with linear bearings, making the design more simple, lightweight and effective, all characteristics that are desirable in a 3D printer.

Materials

PowerSpec Ultra 3D prints with ABS, PLA, PET, Nylon, Polycarbonate and other materials.

The printer comes with a dual extruder module equipped with two different nozzles. It is controlled by dual active cooling fans for printing with PLA-type materials. By cooling the model down, they reduce warping, stringing and, generally, make for higher quality prints.

Look at this cool model printed with Hatchbox grey PLA. The figures have been printed with a 0.3mm nozzle at a 0.15mm layer height.

Unlike many FDM printers, the PowerSpec Ultra 3D has a heated print bed and closed print chamber, which means it can reliably print with ABS-type materials.

Thanks to the dual extruder head, the below-pictured model has been printed with HIPS and ABS simultaneously.

The build area of 8.9 x 5.7 x 5.9 inches (226 x 145 x 150 mm) lets you print a variety of small-to-medium-sized objects. For larger prints, slice the model in parts and then assemble them.

Printer controls

The printer is controlled via PC or the built-in LCD interface.

You can print your 3D models from a paired computer or via an SD card. The printer includes an LED strip lighting to comfortably see the model while printing.

3D models can be printed from computer via an SD card and USB.

The printer works with PowerPrint software. The program supports STL, OBJ, and FPP 3D models. It is available for Windows (XP/Win 7/Win8 32-bit and 64 bit), and Mac OS X.
