The myCobot 280 Jetson Nano designed by the Chinese-based Elephant Robotics company is one of the world’s most compact and lightweight 6-axis robotic arms. The device belongs to myCobot 280 series, alongside myCobot 280 Pi, myCobot 280 M5Stack, and myCobot 280 for Arduino models. All the four modifications share the same mechanical construction, with the key difference in the hardware, or, more precisely, the processor the model is based on; and, consequently, some variations in operation, capabilities, and application scenarios.
The products from the lineup weigh only 850 grams, with the maximum load capacity of 250 grams and the working radius of 280 mm. They are all Linux-compatible, have built-in ROS and Python support, and feature Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Elephant Robotics myCobot 280 Jetson Nano is based on the NVIDIA Jetson Nano module with impressive video capabilities, perfectly suitable for advanced AI tasks. It features the 4-core 1.43 GHz CPU and 128-core Maxwell GPU and can simultaneously process multiple video streams. It comes with Ubuntu 18.04 system, built-in Python, myBlockly, ROS, OpenCV and driver libraries, providing the user with a choice of programming tools.
The end of the arm houses the ESP32-based M5Stack Atom development board with a 5 x 5 RGB LED matrix panel, additional GPIO pins, an IR sensor, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, a programmable button, and a USB-C port. The arm end is equipped with a Lego-compatible connector that expands the cobot’s customization opportunities and allows for quick and easy installation of multiple end effectors, including grippers, suction pumps, sensors, cameras, and much more.
The Lego-compatible base of myCobot 280 Jetson Nano allows you to attach an optional flat or G-shaped base for enhanced stability.
The Elephant Robotics myCobot 280 Jetson Nano comes fully assembled and is ready to interact right out of the box.
Six high-performance servo motors of myCobot 280 Jetson Nano provide quick response and smooth rotation of the six joints with the repeatability of ±0.5 mm which is surprisingly good for such an affordable consumer device. This makes the cobot suitable for a wide application range not limited only to home use.
The Elephant Robotics myCobot 280 Jetson Nano is a compact yet fully functional robotic arm providing versatile opportunities for secondary development of cross-platform software. Thanks to the impressive video capabilities of the NVIDIA Jetson Nano module, this robotic arm’s performance is extremely efficient when it comes to various applications using computer vision. It works great with numerous educational applications helping children explore the world of robotics and master basic coding skills. For example, myCobot 280 Jetson Nano can use the color recognition function to demonstrate how industrial robots perform sorting tasks.
Being equipped with an additional sensor, the cobot can distantly measure people’s temperature.
You can also use myCobot 280 Jetson Nano for various smart home applications, in medical or scientific labs, or just for fun.
The working range of myCobot 280 Jetson Nano is 280 mm. All the joints except the first and the fifth ones have no rotation limits for smooth and versatile operation.
There are several ways of programming myCobot 280 Jetson Nano.
You can use myBlockly visual coding tool based on block programming method. This is a great and simple way to make first steps in programming for beginners and kids.
For advanced users there is a support of Python API and Robot Operating System (ROS). You can use the RoboFlow visual system designed for industrial robots.
Finally, you can use the simplest drag-and-teach method to show the cobot the required succession of moves. Here again we spot the difference between the four versions of the 280 series. myCobot 280 M5Stack with its built-in screen can operate independently, while the Raspberry Pi and Jetson Nano models require an external display. The Arduino version needs a computer connection for operation.
The Jetson Nano module provides wide connectivity options. It is equipped with 1 x USB 2.0 and 2 x USB 3.0 ports, a microHDMI port, a USB Type-C and microUSB ports, and a 40-pin GPIO interface. It also supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.
Designed specially for myCobot series, myStudio software platform provides the user with firmware updates, video tutorials and use cases, and maintenance and repair assistance.
