The Kinova Jaco is an assistive robotic arm that is intended for people with disabilities who have limited mobility in their arms and upper extremities. It represents a versatile, user-friendly device that can replace the function of the upper limb on one side of the body and overcome upper-body limitations with the autonomy and freedom to perform everyday tasks, from opening doors to eating dinner or taking medication. Designed to reach around the user, hold, handle, and operate objects, the Jaco robot uses the existing wheelchair drive controls and other types of accessible controls to move in space and interact with various objects with its two- or three-finger grips. In this way, Jaco can assist with a wide variety of activities in daily living to increase users’ independence in both medically necessary and essential personal and social tasks.

Being a compact yet powerful solution with an excellent payload-to-weight ratio, Kinova’s Jaco assistive robotic arm can directly connect to wheelchairs and other devices using different connectors. Then, an individual can smoothly operate it through a joystick, head-mounted control, or other technological controls. Mimicking natural movements of a fully functioning human arm, the Jaco robot possesses a long reach coupled with a payload sufficient for the majority of precise lightweight tasks.

The Kinova Jaco boasts inherent safety and convenience by design: default velocity limits ensure that in the event of a collision, the robot would not harm a person. In addition, all settings are configurable to users’ needs. If you operate the robot with one hand, it will be mounted near your opposite shoulder. Furthermore, Jaco is controlled entirely by the user: the robotic arm does not perform automated tasks and does not operate of its own accord. Whether you need to pick up your phone and call for help, open a door, or cross the street, the Jaco robotic arm helps you react to a variety of challenging situations with increased precision and reliability.

The Kinova Jaco assistive robotic arm combines a lightweight, ergonomic, and flexible design, decent working radius, remarkable precision, and intuitive controls, which makes it ideal for integration into your everyday life. Jaco can efficiently perform a wide range of basic operations, empowering you to go out alone, take the elevator, open doors, read, drink, eat, and even brush your teeth and hair.

Processing quality

The Kinova Jaco assistive robotic arm can do almost anything a human arm can do. It features 6 degrees of freedom with a joint range of ±27.7 turns and a maximum speed of 20 cm/s. In combination with 1.6 kg continuous payload and high repeatability, this lets the robot perform an ample range of lightweight precision tasks with ease.

Due to IPX2 ingress protection, the Kinova Jaco can operate in environments with minimal exposure to water droplets falling at up to 15 degrees from vertical, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications where light water spray or dripping may occur. For more application scenarios, an additional protective sleeve can be purchased. Moreover, the robot is fully operational from -10 to 40 °C.

Applications

Thanks to its intuitive controls, rich connectivity options, small footprint, lightweight construction, and low power consumption, the Kinova Jaco gives you a newfound sense of autonomy and improved quality of life. This assistive robotic arm will help maximize your abilities and decrease your reliance on family members and care providers, letting you function at a higher level both at home and in your community. Since 2006, Jaco offers fundamental and life-changing improvements to users’ lives by helping them perform basic tasks defined by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) including:

  • Eating and drinking;
  • Personal hygiene;
  • Medication management;
  • Leisure and active life;
  • Work and school;
  • Personal safety.

The Kinova Jaco assistive robot provides support to individuals affected by a vast array of conditions that limit their upper limbs in the performance of everyday tasks. It offers the next level of mobility to those suffering from:

  • Spinal muscular atrophy;
  • Muscular dystrophy;
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS);
  • Spinal cord injury;
  • Cerebral palsy;
  • Quadriplegia;
  • Amputation;
  • Stroke.

For example, see how the Kinova Jaco helps the user with their everyday life, easily gripping objects, opening doors, pressing light switches, and more:

The implementation of the Kinova Jaco assistive robotic arm with intuitive and user-friendly controls allows people with limited or no upper limb mobility to be more independent and rely less on the assistance of others. Thanks to the Jaco robot, they can lead a more active lifestyle and achieve what was once impossible for them.

Working range

The Kinova Jaco assistive robotic arm features six-axis movement and possesses a maximum reach of up to 900 mm in combination with a flexible and lightweight joint body. Its ergonomic design with a small footprint diameter enables rapid deployment and reasonable use of space.

Robot controls and software

The movements of the Kinova Jaco assistive robotic arm mimic sixteen unique movements of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist with the smoothness and versatility of a fully functioning human arm. Mounted on your power wheelchair, Jaco lets you take full control using the chair’s joystick, head array, sip-and-puff, or almost any other interface in combination. The basic mapping allows performing translations, rotations, and moving the fingers for various everyday tasks, from eating and drinking to painting and watering flowers.

The Kinova OLED display supplied with the Jaco provides users with a visual reference of the status of the robot making for more intuitive controls. It also emits audible signals for warnings. An integrated ambient light sensor will make sure the screen brightness is always optimal while a LED indicator will give feedback on the current mode of operation, power, and connection status. The OLED display usually is used with the Jaco and Jaco Blue Universal Interface to show the user the directions in movement, status, and functions.

The Kinova Lift arm is an optional accessory that increases the Jaco’s vertical range and mounting flexibility. This allows users to drive up to desks and tables without interference. A swing-away mechanism lets you move Jaco out of the way temporarily to facilitate transfers into and out of the wheelchair.

As the main connectivity means, the Jaco Blue Universal Interface combines legacy connection with new wireless Bluetooth, powered USB, and analog DB9 connections to make the Jaco assistive robotic arm more accessible than ever before. The device is used to convert wheelchair control interfaces in a communication protocol compatible with the Jaco as well as control the Kinova Lift Arm accessory. Thus, the Jaco Blue provides a friendly and comfortable environment being a reliable bridge between the end-user, their robot, power chair, and people around them.

Powered by Assistive Robot Configurator with a clear and intuitive interface, the Kinova Jaco can be tailored to the needs of the user. The included USB storage device contains this program used to make adjustments to some of the features in Jaco. Please note that some settings are locked and can be changed only by a technician.
