The Matter and Form THREE is a metrology-grade structured-light 3D scanner equipped with a powerful DLP projector and dual 13 MP Sony optical sensors. As the world’s first 3D scanner engineered with fully onboard software that runs on the built-in CPU with an integrated GPU unit, it also serves as a vision development tool. Apart from saving a project in its internal storage, the scanner can be seamlessly operated via any modern web browser from almost any device, including a tablet. THREE does not require attachment of wires, program installation, internet connection, cloud service, or subscription fee, which makes it a perfectly self-contained device available at a prosumer price point and aimed at an increasingly user-friendly scanning experience.

With a flexible working distance, the Matter and Form THREE is great for various purposes. Thanks to its advanced hardware, the device lets one scan more objects and more colors in a larger range of sizes than any other scanner on the market. The outstanding scan accuracy is achieved due to rapid data processing and automatic user-directed alignment.

Providing an intuitive interface, Ethernet / Wi-Fi connectivity, a full API and on-board processing, the Matter and Form THREE is one of the easiest 3D scanners to use, with a quick setup and simple controls. The ergonomic design, weight of only 709 grams, and thoughtful package with a tripod and rotating table ensure comfortable device management. Combining impressive scan quality and accessibility, THREE is well suited to the needs of both new and seasoned users.

With an astonishing range of capabilities and features that are not presented in any other 3D scanner at the moment, the Matter and Form THREE will be an essential part of a scanning workflow for a variety of personal and professional applications. The device allows one to scan a multitude of objects, from miniatures and mechanical parts to artifacts and full-size cars. It can serve as a cost-effective 3D digitization solution for use in many areas, such as:

  • Car customization
  • Industrial design
  • Engineering design
  • Art and design
  • Archeology

Scan accuracy

The Matter and Form THREE is equipped with 13 MP Sony optical sensors and a powerful DLP projector featuring a high-speed 60 FPS frame rate. To ensure metrology-grade accuracy of the rendered models, the developer created software that fully exploits the hardware to capture and intelligently process 37 micron resolution scans in about 20 seconds. Thus, the device is capable of reconstructing high-resolution geometric structures and capturing fine details to handle scanning tasks for various professional spheres.

Due to the innovative ChromaSpec™ technology, the Matter and Form THREE is great for scanning objects with rich colors. This unique algorithm uses the full spectrum of visible light to detect and process different-colored areas of the object and perfectly recreate its geometry. Plus, most of the time there is no need to apply scan sprays, which allows one to accelerate workflow for their scan projects.

While other scanners require you to hold them steady to avoid losing tracking and constantly check a computer screen to see if everything is working right, THREE comes with automatic and user-directed scan alignment. All you need to do is simply point the scanner at what you want to capture, and the software will automatically align the scans on completion.

Check out the level of detail the scanner is capable of:

Scan volume

The Matter and Form THREE features powerful projected light and focusable, high-resolution cameras, which makes for a flexible scanning range for rendering objects of different sizes, with the working distance standing at 220–700 mm. The device can accurately capture small to large-sized objects with features from 0.2 mm. With THREE, one can go from scanning a car engine to a toy car miniature in seconds without a loss of precision and detail.

Scanner controls

To begin using the Matter and Form THREE, just mount the scanner on the dedicated tripod, plug it in using the cable that is supplied with the device, open your web browser, and start scanning. There is no need to hold a scanner in a particular position: THREE automatically combines the scans, so you can capture large objects in sections with ease.

This is how a full workflow with the THREE looks like:

Software

The Matter and Form THREE comes with integrated software featuring a clear user interface with intuitive controls. It can be connected to your network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The scanner supports the most common file formats, such as PLY, OBJ, STL, etc. and provides rapid data acquisition with the capture time of 4 seconds and high processing speed of 10–15 seconds.

As the world’s first 3D scanner with a built-in CPU and GPU as well as fully onboard software, the Matter and Form THREE can be run in any modern web browser and on any operating system, no powerful computer required. Thus, one can freely use the scanner with any PC, tablet, or iPad that supports Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge web browsers. With its full-fledged browser functionality, the device delivers a really smooth, convenient, and affordable 3D scanning experience.

In addition, the THREE is an edge computing device that offers a full API for programmers, with ready-to-go open source projects and powerful plugins like JupyterLab and Python. Being a great tool for both professionals and students taking their first steps in machine vision, it lets one make their own 2D and 3D computer vision and automation systems with endless creative possibilities, such as object detection and facial recognition, right on the scanner itself. Moreover, thanks to the API you are able to control the device remotely from a computer, robot, or robotic arm, and even combine it with Home Assistant. Currently, the Matter and Form THREE is the only 3D scanner with a built-in vision development runtime.
