Print quality

The Modix MAMA-1700 is an FGF + FFF FDM 3D printer that can print layers at 600 micron. This way one can produce parts with relatively smooth exterior surfaces, which is more than enough for most applications of life-size models.

Due to the improved closed loop NEMA-23 motors (compared to NEMA-17 motors for the Modix V3 3D printers), the MAMA-1700 model provides the accelerated travel speed of up to 350 mm/s and maximum printing speed of up to 250 mm/s.

As an FGF 3D printer, the Modix MAMA-1700 is equipped with the — a high-performance pellet extruder designed for industrial-scale 3D printing. Introduced back in 2018, this pellet extruder boasts a track record of reliability and experience. The key features of the DYZE Design Pulsar Pellet Extruder include:

  1. High Flow Rate: Capable of delivering a flow rate of up to 500 mm³/s, Pulsar enables printing of large-scale objects at speeds of up to 3 kg per hour.
  2. Material Versatility: Pulsar supports a wide range of materials including PLA, ABS, TPE, TPU, PVA, HIPS, PC, PETG, Nylon, and composites such as wood, glass fiber, and carbon fiber filled pellets. It also accommodates recycled materials, enhancing the printer’s sustainability.
  3. Precision and Reliability: The DYZE Design extruder is built with precision engineering to ensure consistent and reliable extrusion, crucial for industrial applications.
  4. Ease of Maintenance: Pulsar is designed for easy maintenance, reducing downtime and operational costs.
  5. Effective Cooling: The DYZE Pulsar pellet extruder comes with a water-cooled design and 4 part cooling fans for better print quality.

The DYZE Design Pulsar Pellet Extruder will offer nozzles from 1 mm to 5 mm in diameter and several screws to meet various pellet 3D printing needs, such as furniture and various commercial products.

Being a hybrid 3D printing solution, the Modix MAMA-1700 features a high-flow interchangeable filament extruder as a default alternative — Griffin Ultra hotend by Modix. It is capable of printing thick layers with a flow rate of 160 mm³/s and build speed of up to 500 g of material per hour. This enables rapid production of impressively large objects, while significantly reducing total print times.

Designed with a reinforced frame made of strong 8080 mm profiles, the Modix MAMA-1700 is capable of printing well even without the enclosure, although this would hardly be preferable, as the included enclosure helps maintain the internal ambient temperature of the heated build chamber. In addition, the print bed is attached to the HIWIN rails installed on the Z profiles, which stabilizes the entire frame during the printing process.

The Modix MAMA series supports the additional for multi-material printing of complex internal geometries (will be available soon). This extreme flexibility provides the user with wider design capabilities.

Materials

The Modix MAMA-1700 is a hybrid 3D printer with high-temperature capabilities, including a heated build plate (120 °C) and build chamber (60 °C), that can print with a wide range of plastic pellets and filaments. The MAMA-1700 model supports printing with PLA, ABS, TPE, TPU, PVA, HIPS, PC, PETG, Nylon (PA), composite pellets, such as PETG-CF (Carbon Fiber) and PETG-GF (Glass Fiber), wood, glass and carbon fiber filled materials as well as recycled options from almost any manufacturer.

Pellet printing provides the user with a possibility of rapid material change, allowing for the combination of different plastics in a single project. Printing with pellets, especially made of recycled plastics, is not only faster but also more efficient in terms of material cost and post-processing (sanding, drilling, etc.). For example, this 1.4 m mold (7 kg) was printed with wood-filled pellets in just 5 hours.

Nozzle – 3 mm, extrusion width – 4 mm, layer height – 2 mm

For more complex projects, one can use the optional (ETA — Q1/2025). With the option to use a secondary print head, one can print with a combination of pellet and pellet or pellet with filament. This setup is particularly advantageous for support structures, as water-soluble filament can be used for easy post-processing and support removal. This capability allows for the creation of complex internal geometries and cavities, enhancing design flexibility and reducing the time and effort required for post-processing.

Similar to the Modix V4 3D printers, the MAMA-1700 model comes with default clog detectors for both extruders that can easily detect pellet or filament run-out, under-extrusion, and hotend clogs. This allows the user to quickly fix the problem and avoid negative impact on the quality of the printed items.

Build volume

The enormous build area of 66.9 x 39.4 x 39.4 in (1700 x 1000 x 1000 mm) lets you print just about anything. Thanks to its incredible width, the Modix MAMA-1700 eliminates the need for assembling parts from multiple smaller prints. By enabling printing of objects up to 1.7 m wide or tall, the machine drastically reduces the time spent on gluing and assembly, leading to stronger, seamless final products.
