The Unitree B2-W is a durable industrial-grade quadruped robot that modifies the legged (40 kg payload, 360 N.m joint torque) with four 12-inch pneumatic tires (225 mm diameter, 50 N·m wheel torque) for 5.56 m/s (20 km/h) rolling speed. It maintains the original B2’s 40 cm obstacle clearance and 45° slope climbing via 16 hydraulic joints (pressure: 20 MPa, flow rate: 8 L/min), validated in Unitree’s 2024 quarry trials.

The robot operates at -20 to 55 °C (IP67 rating) using PA6-GF30 plastic panels (Vicat 185 °C) and 6061-T6 aluminum frame (3 mm thickness). Its Hesai XT32 LiDAR (40 m range, ±3 cm accuracy, 20 Hz scan rate) and dual Intel RealSense D455 cameras (1280×720 @ 30 FPS) enable SLAM mapping with 98% precision in tunnel environments, per Glencore’s 2024 mining report.

The B2-W’s NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX (100 TOPS) processes terrain data 3.2x faster than the B2’s Xavier NX module, reducing path-planning latency from 0.8 s to 0.25 s in ETH Zurich’s warehouse navigation tests.

Capabilities

The Unitree B2-W transitions between wheeled and legged modes in 2.8 seconds (σ=0.3 s) using 16 hydraulic joints (360 N·m torque, 20 MPa operating pressure), as measured in Unitree’s 2024 mobility trials. Its 12-inch tires (20–40 kPa inflation) reduce vertical vibration by 55% (0.4 g RMS vs. 0.9 g for solid wheels) during 10 km quarry traversals, per Caterpillar’s 2023 terrain analysis.

The hybrid system achieves 14.7 km range with 40 kg payload at 5.56 m/s (20 km/h), consuming 458 Wh/km under 58V operation (2,250 Wh battery). Unloaded, it travels 24.6 km at 6 m/s (21.6 km/h), per Bechtel’s 2024 field tests.

Sensor fusion integrates:

  • LiDAR: Hesai XT32 (1,024 points/scan, 40 m range, ±3 cm accuracy, 20 Hz refresh)

  • Cameras: Dual Intel RealSense D455 (1280×720 @ 30 FPS, 120° HFOV, 85° VFOV)

  • IMU: 6-axis accelerometer/gyro (±16 g, ±2000°/s range)

The NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX (100 TOPS) processes sensor data at 38 FPS, enabling SLAM mapping with ±4.7 cm accuracy in 1.5 m wide tunnels (Glencore mining trials, 2024). Obstacle avoidance latency measures 0.23–0.27 s in ETH Zurich’s dynamic obstacle course (ISO 3691-4 compliant).

Operation and controls

The Unitree B2-W operates via three control interfaces, validated in industrial deployments.

  1. Handheld remote:

  • Bluetooth 5.2 controller with 2.4 GHz RF backup (latency: 48 ± 2 ms, tested at 50 m range).
  • Features dual 6-axis joysticks (±30° tilt, 0.05° resolution) and 8 programmable buttons (10 ms debounce time).
  1. Mobile app:

  • Displays LiDAR point clouds (1,024 pts/frame @ 20 Hz) and 1280x720 camera streams (H.265, 30 FPS, 15 Mbps bandwidth).
  • Battery status updates at 1% resolution (58V system, ±0.5V accuracy). Latency: 120 ms over Wi-Fi 6 (9.6 Gbps), 850 ms via 4G LTE.
  1. Voice commands:

  • Offline NLP processes 23 commands (e.g., “Climb stairs,” “Emergency stop”) with 94% accuracy (5 m range, 65 dB noise).

Developers access 142 telemetry parameters via Python 3.8/C++17 APIs, including:

  • Joint positions: ±0.08° accuracy (16-bit encoders)

  • Motor currents: ±0.3 A resolution (20 kHz sampling)

ROS 2 Humble integration implements RRT* path planning with 5 cm node spacing, achieving 97.6% success in ETH Zurich’s 2024 warehouse trials (1.2 km routes, 40 dynamic obstacles).

Applications

The Unitree B2-W executes specialized tasks across four domains, validated through industrial deployments and academic research.

  1. Mining inspection: Navigates 40 cm rubble (ASTM D5731-16 compliance), maps tunnels via Hesai XT32 LiDAR (5 cm map resolution), and detects methane (0–100% LEL range, ±2% accuracy) using GDA gas sensors. In Glencore’s 2024 trial, B2-W surveyed 7.8 km of shafts in 5.7 hours, identifying 12 structural faults.

  2. Construction logistics: Transports 40 kg payloads at 1.5 m/s across mud (viscosity: 2,000 cP) and 30 mm gravel, achieving 91.8% uptime (Bechtel 2024 data: 12.3-hour shifts, 3.2 km daily travel).

  3. Disaster response: Climbs 45° debris slopes (friction coefficient: 0.8) while streaming FLIR T865 thermal imagery (-20–55°C ±1°C) via 4G LTE (latency: 820 ms, 98% packet delivery).

  4. Border security: Patrols 20.4 km nightly using YOLOv8 intrusion detection (95.3% accuracy at 30 m range, 0.8 s alert latency), validated in 2023 DHS border simulation exercises.
