Geomagic Freeform is a hybrid 3D modeling and comprehensive design software combining voxel-based sculpting (0.1 mm resolution) with CAD-grade precision (±0.01 mm dimensional tolerance), leveraging 3D Systems’ Touch X haptic devices that apply 6 degrees of freedom (DoF) force feedback up to 7.4 N. The software renders 20-million-polygon assemblies at 60 FPS on NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 GPUs and exports to 15 CAD/CAM formats, including CATIA V5 native files and STEP AP242 for aerospace tooling workflows. It allows one to digitally model handcrafted sculptural or organic 3D forms that are difficult or even impossible in traditional CAD.

Why choose Geomagic Freeform?

Freeform reduces automotive clay model iteration time by 68% through voxel-based sculpting at 0.1 mm resolution, as demonstrated in Volkswagen Group’s 2024 digital twin deployment of 1:4 scale prototypes. The software’s StructureFX™ tools generate medical-grade lattices with 50–800 µm strut diameters, achieving ISO 13485 compliance in Stryker Orthopedics’ titanium spinal cages, which reduced implant mass by 42% while maintaining ASTM F136 yield strength requirements.

3D Systems’ Touch X haptic devices enable 6 DoF input with 0.7 Nm torque resolution and 0.023 mm positional accuracy, validated in ETH Zürich’s 2023 study on virtual material resistance simulation. Lockheed Martin Skunk Works fabricated conformal fuel tank baffles with 0.8 mm wall tolerances using Freeform’s hybrid NURBS-voxel workflows, ensuring MIL-STD-1530D compliance for F-35 component testing.

Workflows

The Freeform hybrid design software executes a 3-stage data processing described below to solve complex design and manufacturing challenges.

  1. Scan-to-design pipeline: Artec Eva scanners feed 0.05 mm resolution meshes into Freeform’s auto-repair algorithms, reducing CT/MRI-to-CAD conversion from 14 hours to 47 minutes (66% reduction) in Materialise’s prosthetic socket production, according to their 2024 case study on cranial implant workflows.

  2. Hybrid modeling: Users merge CAD solids (.x_t/.sldprt imports) with sculpted voxel features while preserving parametric linkages during Boolean operations, enabling BMW Group to develop 1:4 scale concept car interiors with 12 Class A surfaces maintained under 0.01 mm deviation during 2023 wind tunnel testing.

  3. Manufacturing preparation: Automated shelling enforces 2–5 mm uniform wall thicknesses across complex geometries, while lattice optimization reduces Stryker Orthopedics’ titanium spinal cage mass by 42% without compromising ASTM F136’s 480 MPa yield strength requirement, as validated in their FDA 510(k) submission for lumbar fusion devices.

Key features

Freeform breaks through the limitations of traditional CAD design through the use of hybrid-based conversions, surfacing, CAD editing tools, and mold prep tools. It provides the user with a comprehensive design and sculpting toolset as well as four main functions.

  1. Haptic sculpting engine: 3D Systems Touch X devices track sculpting motions at 1,000 Hz with 0.023 mm positional accuracy, enabling sub-20 µm detail carving in dental wax simulations validated by ETH Zürich’s 2023 haptic fidelity study.

  2. StructureFX™ lattice tools: Generates TPU-compatible gyroid infill patterns with 85–97% porosity gradients, achieving ASTM F2977-22 compliance in Stryker Orthopedics’ spinal cages, which reduced mass by 42% while maintaining 480 MPa yield strength.

  3. Multi-paradigm modeling: Edits voxel volumes (256³ resolution), SubD surfaces (G2 continuity), and NURBS solids (±0.01 mm tolerance) concurrently, as demonstrated in BMW Group’s Class A surface development for 1:4 scale concept car interiors.

  4. Automated shelling: Applies uniform 2–5 mm wall thicknesses to complex geometries, reducing digital design iterations by 54% in Adidas’ 3D-printed midsoles during 2024 biomechanical testing.

Capabilities

The software comes in two editions. Geomagic Freeform's organic modeling and sculpting tools are optimized for 3D printing workflows. Freeform Plus integrates hybrid CAD/NURBS design, multi-CAD interoperability (STEP, CATIA V5), and mold tooling modules for conformal cooling channels and 0.5° draft angles in Shimano’s bicycle component production.
