The Modix Big-120Z is an extra-tall self-assembly FDM 3D printer kit produced by Modix. Targeted to the professional market, this large-format modular 3D printer stands out for its capability of printing super-tall objects in one piece. Indeed, it boasts a huge print volume of 600 x 600 x 1,200 mm. Priced-to-please, its modularity leaves room for a wide range of upgrades and add-ons.
As part of the popular Modix Big Series, the Big-120Z is characterized by a quality construction entirely made with professional-grade standardized components. The robust frame is composed of T-slot aluminum profiles and powder-coated brackets and joints. The axes feature Hiwin MGW motion rails, which make for smooth and steady movement. The Z-axis asset is made up of 4 Trinamic stepper motors with a lead screw. The Modix Big-120Z shares with its predecessors the same engineering-grade IGUS Chainflex signal cables and PU timing belt with steel cores. The heated bed benefits from dual-zone silicon heaters and is covered in PEI with 3M adhesive for better adhesion and easier part detachment. The printer also includes an end-of-the-filament sensor, a game-changer when talking about large-format 3D printing.
Unlike the other Modix Big printers, the Big-120Z comes bundled with a closed enclosure made of Aluminum Composite Panels and polycarbonate covers. The enclosure grants effective thermal insulation while reducing the operation noise. The machine also comes stock with a dual-print head for multi-material and multi-color printing. According to the company, this printer is suitable for a variety of applications in multiple fields, including interior design, fashion, engineering, arts, and entertainment. As you can see from this pic, the Big-120Z can even print a real-scale person.
The Modix Big-120Z is a large-format professional 3D printer kit that can print parts with an accuracy of 40 microns and smooth exterior surfaces. The heated bed features a 100-probing-point automatic leveling system for proper calibration and higher precision. The quality hardware and software make for fine printing results with almost no need for post-processing.
The Modix Big-120Z comes stock with 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 mm nozzles. It also supports any compatible Volcano nozzles of up to 1.2mm in diameter. Depending on your printing requirements, you are free to choose the nozzle size you prefer.

The print head runs on Hiwin motion rails, which makes printing reliable, fast and precise.
The Big-120Z adopts a dual E3D Titan Aero direct extruder with dual E3D Super Volcano hotends. This lets you print with a selection of filaments, including PLA, PETG, PVA, ABS, ASA, PC, Nylon, TPU, Woodfil, Carbon composite and other exotic materials.
According to the producer, the default maximum temperature of the extruder is 285°C, but it can be easily hacked to reach up to 400°C. This gives you the possibility to print with professional-grade materials.
The extruder module comes with 5015 blower fans for printing with PLA-type materials. By cooling the model down, it reduces warping, stringing and, generally, makes for higher quality prints. Also, it reduces the risk of clogging.

Unlike the other Modix Big 3D printers, the Big-120Z comes stock with both an aluminum heated bed (120°C) and an enclosure. The enclosed print chamber keeps the printing temperature constant. This way the print quality would not be affected by temperature fluctuations as a result of drafts and other factors.
The Modix Big-120Z features an open material system. This means you can print with any third-party 1.75 mm filament. Also, it seems that some users modded the device to successfully print with 2.85mm materials.
The build area of 23.6 x 23.6 x 47.2 inches (600 x 600 x 1,200 mm) lets you print very tall models in one piece, just like this 1.2-meter-tall Coca Cola bottle.
You can operate the printer either via a USB-tethered computer or directly via the integrated touch-screen.
You can easily transfer your 3D models from a computer via USB cable or via an external SD card.
The printer is compatible with the major 3D file formats. Thus, it can work with almost any 3D printing slicing software, including Cura, Slic3r, Simplify3D, Printerface, and many others.
