The Original Prusa MK4 is the next generation of the extremely successful Prusa MK3 line-up. The machine has undergone a number of major upgrades with 90% of the MK3S+ parts having been changed and improved. The printer looks similar to the MK3S+, featuring the same Cartesian kinematics, but it received a new die-cast aluminum frame as well as new 0.9° low-inductance stepper motors that help eliminate vertical fine artifacts, and thicker 10-mm rods on the Z-axis. There are two versions of the Original Prusa MK4 available, which are a DIY kit and an assembled modification.
One of the most prominent features of the MK4 is the extruder, or Nextruder, which is a smaller and lighter version of the one used on the Prusa XL model. It is equipped with a load cell sensor that eliminates the need for manual Z-height adjustment and ensures what the company calls “always perfect first layer”. The quick-swap nozzle design with two thumbscrews allows for easy nozzle replacement.
The printer features the new custom 32-bit STM32-powered xBuddy mainboard with multiple ports, including USB-C service port, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. To ensure safe operation, the mainboard communicates with four thermistors for the hotend, heatbreak, heatbed, and ambient, and has hardware overcurrent protection that disconnects the heater and print bed power if the total current exceeds 15 A. The power panic function allows resuming printing after the power outage. Prusa Research has implemented input shaper and pressure advance technologies into the MK4. The former helps eliminate resonance in prints, while pressure advance is used to control the filament flow. Both technologies allow for a significant boost in print speed without losing the quality.
The MK4 is fully compatible with the Prusa MMU3 for multi-material printing with up to 5 filaments and the Original Prusa Enclosure for printing with temperature-sensitive thermoplastics.

Excellent print quality has always been one of the strong points of Prusa printers, and the MK4 is not an exception to the rule. Numerous advanced technologies allow the machine to create impeccable models at an impressive speed, with a minimum layer height of 0.05 mm. The machine comes with a standard 0.4 mm nozzle which can be easily replaced with 0.25–0.8 mm for your particular needs. The manufacturer offers a Nextruder-to-V6 adapter that allows using any E3D V6-compatible nozzles with the MK4.

The maximum nozzle temperature of 300 °C and the 120 °C heated print bed make the Original Prusa MK4 compatible with a wide range of filaments such as PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, Flex, HIPS, PA, PVA, PC, PP, CPE, PVB, NGEN, composites, and others. The printer can process both proprietary Prusament and third-party filaments, providing the user with a wide choice of available 1.75 mm thermoplastics.
The MK4 features a 250 x 210 x 220 mm build volume, which is 10 mm more on the Z-height than the Original Prusa MK3S+, due to the more compact extruder. The same heated print bed with removable magnetic spring steel sheets allows for good first layer adhesion and easy print removal. The machine comes standard with a Smooth PEI sheet, and the user can additionally purchase Satin, Textured PEI, or PA Nylon sheets.
The printer is controlled via a 3.5" full-color graphic LCD with G-code thumbnails, QR-codes, graphics, and longer text support. It is not a touchscreen, so navigation is performed with a rotary knob. The UI is customizable, allowing the user to select up to five options in the footer of the main screen, such as temperatures, fan speeds and print speed. There is a programmable RGB status bar under the screen to show the current status of the printer. Next to the LCD, there is a USB-A port. Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity is available with the new xBuddy mainboard, allowing it to control the printer via a web browser.
The MK4 is recommended to be used with the open-source PrusaSlicer software with numerous useful tools such as organic supports, cutting, automated object distribution, ironing, and others. It features ready-to-use material profiles that ensure perfect print results with different filaments and cut down print preparation time.
