The Einscan HX is an industrial handheld 3D scanner, combining two light sources: laser and structured light. It is a premium lightweight device with a futuristic and ergonomic design that can be taken to remote sites for scanning. The device can boast high-resolution scans, large scan volume, fast scan speed, and a handful of other useful features. It features an innovative hybrid system that employs dual blue LED lights allowing it to enter the rapid 3D scanning mode. Besides, there is a laser scanning mode designed to capture dark-colored models and objects with a reflective surface. Thanks to its built-in color camera, the scanner supports full-color capture and allows for texture tracking.

The recommended object size range for the scanner is between 30 and 300 cm.

The scanner can be used in a plethora of different applications, such as:

  • Architecture
  • Art and generative design
  • Reverse engineering
  • Manufacturing
  • AR, VR, 3D modeling
  • Heritage preservation, artifact restoration
  • Science and education
  • Healthcare
  • Full-body and partial human scans

(Note: the STL files below is what you can achieve after post-processing the raw scans in the mesh-to-CAD editing software.)

How about a full-scale scan of a large object?

You might also want to take a look at this render of a car door. With sufficient post-processing, one can achieve high levels of precision and smooth angles.

As you can see, with the right toolkit the EinScan-HX can be used to deliver well-detailed mesh and CAD files. Besides, it does this at a fast speed. Proceed with the review for further specs.

Scan accuracy

The EinScan HX is a handheld 3D scanner that features high accuracy and scan speed. It provides different precision and speed levels depending on the mode selected. The Rapid Scan Mode can provide an up to 0.05 mm accuracy at a speed of up to 1,200,000 points/s. The Laser Scan Mode allows scanning at up to 480,000 points/s providing a level of accuracy of up to 0.04 mm.

The EinScan HX offers quite a large single-scan range. In rapid mode, it works within a 200mm-700mm depth of field and provides a 420mm*440mm FOV with a point distance between 0.25 mm – 3 mm. For laser mode, there is an outstanding 350mm-610mm depth of field along with a max FOV of 380mm*400mm and 0.05mm - 3mm point distance.

Scanning Tips

Overall tips:

  • When using the Rapid Scan Mode, apply a matte spray to scan dark, shiny and transparent objects
  • Scan with a dark background
  • Use correct scanner settings
  • Fine-tune your scanner
  • Create a controlled environment
  • Avoid scanning moving objects

The Laser Scan mode is designed for:

  • Scanning objects with a transparent, black or shiny surface
  • Scanning with markers

The Rapid Scan mode is designed for:

  • A fast scanning experience
  • Scanning objects with good geometry with the use of markers, feature, hybrid, and texture align modes

Scanner controls

To begin using the scanner to your heart’s content, just connect it to your computer with the dedicated USB cable and complete the setup as per the manual.

The EinScan HX comes with a proprietary ExScan Pro software solution. It is a professional software for 3D scanning and data processing that offers a variety of advanced options for data editing. For instance, it features such data editing tools as smoothing, simplification, manual and automatic hole filling, and sharpening.

Moreover, the scanner is supplied with the Solid Edge SHINING 3D Edition. It is a 3D design software that can be used to assist with reverse engineering, generative design, convergent and synchronous modeling.

For mesh editing, we strongly recommend acquiring the Geomagic Essentials software for its many tools to analyze and clean mesh data. Scan data is often-times imperfect, meaning there might be holes and imperfections in the data that you'll be scratching your head on how to fix. The ExScan software and SolidEdge does have a toolkit for fixing meshes but it is not as extensive or automatic as the tools in Geomagic Essentials. You will save a lot of time with the full Scan to CAD process with Geomagic Essentials in between, not to mention it is much more effective at working with large-sized files. The standard CAD software suites such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, etc. tend to have problems with large-sized mesh files.

There are two ways Geomagic Essentials help with reverse engineering. If your focus is on solid modeling you can use GE to extract CAD data (surfaces and solids) and curve data (wire-frame geometry) from triangular meshes (scan data). The region and feature extraction toolkit will help you extract faces or bounded surfaces and export into an IGES or STP format. The curve drawing tools will help you extract wire-frame geometry and export to IGES format. These two datasets along with the scan file is essential for a reverse engineering workflow. The NURBS surfacing tool also helps create a lightweight CAD model that you can export to an STP file for SolidWorks. This is especially helpful if your focus is on free-form modeling because you can freely manipulate the surface data in Geomagic and most CAD programs.

Having such powerful tools at your disposal, you will be in a strong position to execute complex projects.
