The EinScan Pro HD is a professional handheld Structured Light 3D scanner. Being an upgraded version of the EinScan Pro, this device boasts incredible high-resolution scans, a large scan area, fast scan speed, and a handful of other useful features. It shows much better performance at scanning complex, dark, and casting metal surfaces due to optimized algorithms and an improved projector than the previous generation of the Einscan Pro series. (Note: to improve your scanning results when working with these surfaces we would recommend using a 3D scanning spray such as AESUB).

The EinScan Pro HD is a lightweight scanner that can easily be taken anywhere thanks to its ergonomic design. This modular device offers four different scan modes, each optimized for various professional applications delivering fast industry-grade results.

It is a highly upgradeable multipurpose device that offers optional color and industrial add-ons to extend its range of applications even more.

The recommended object size range for the scanner is between 30 and 300 cm. When using the Tripod and the Turntable Add-On, you can scan objects between 3 and 30 cm.

The scanner can be used in a plethora of different applications, such as:

  • Architecture
  • Art and generative design
  • Reverse engineering
  • Manufacturing
  • AR, VR, 3D modeling
  • Heritage preservation, artifact restoration
  • Science and education
  • Healthcare
  • Full-body and partial human scans

Take a look at this accurate render of a sculpture.

(Note: the STL files below is what you can achieve after post-processing the raw scans in the mesh-to-CAD editing software.)

What about scanning objects with complex geometry? Check out this precise render of a metal part. With this level of accuracy, the scanner is suitable for many kinds of industrial applications.

Last but not the least, there is a render of a human face. Take a look at the incredible level of precision, all the details, and smooth angles — this render has captured everything up to the last wrinkle.

As you can see, with the right toolkit the EinScan Pro HD can be used to deliver well-detailed mesh and CAD files. Besides, it does this at a fast speed. Proceed with the review for further specs.

Scan accuracy

EinScan Pro HD is a handheld 3D scanner with outstanding accuracy and scan speed. It provides different precision and speed levels depending on the mode selected. The Handheld HD Mode can provide accuracy of up to 0.045 mm at a speed of up to 3,000,000 points per second (10 fps). The Rapid Scan Mode allows scanning at up to 1,500,000 points per second (30 fps) within the accuracy of up to 0.1 mm, it is targeted at scanning large objects. Finally, the Fixed Scan Mode makes it possible to capture an object in just half a second at the precision level of up to 0.04 mm. The optimal operating distance of the scanner is 510 mm.

The EinScan Pro HD offers a large single-scan range starting from 209 x 160 mm and up to 310 x 240 mm with a point distance between 0.2 and 3 mm.

Addons

In case you wish to upgrade the scanner, you can order it with the Industrial and/or Color Packs.

The Color Pack add-on provides you with an additional HD camera that lets you take full-color scans while also capturing the texture of a scanned object.

The Industrial Pack addon includes an automatic turntable and a tripod, completing a setup for rapidly-paced scanning of small and medium-sized objects.

Scanning Tips

Overall tips:

  • Apply a matte spray to easily scan dark, shiny, and transparent objects
  • Scan with a dark background
  • Use correct scanner settings
  • Fine-tune your scanner
  • Create a controlled environment
  • Avoid scanning moving objects

The Handheld Rapid Scan mode is designed for:

  • A fast scanning experience
  • Scanning objects with good geometry with feature alignment
  • Scanning large and heavy objects

The Handheld HD Scan mode is designed for:

  • High accuracy and precision
  • Scanning large and heavy objects

The Fixed Turntable Scan mode is designed for:

  • Providing the utmost degree of accuracy and resolution
  • Objects between 3 and 30 cm
  • Objects that weigh less than 5 kg

The Fixed without Turntable Scan mode is designed for:

  • High accuracy and resolution
  • Objects too big or too heavy to be placed on the turntable

Scanner controls

To begin using the scanner to your heart’s content, just connect it to your computer with the dedicated USB aviation cable and complete the guided setup.

Software

The EinScan Pro HD comes with a highly efficient proprietary ExScan Pro software solution. It is a professional software for 3D scanning and data processing that offers a variety of advanced options for data editing. For instance, it features point clouds generation, meshing, texture alignment, and post-processing.

Moreover, the scanner is supplied with the Solid Edge SHINING 3D Edition. It is a 3D design software that can be used to assist with reverse engineering, generative design, convergent and synchronous modeling.

For mesh editing, we strongly recommend acquiring the Geomagic Essentials software for its many tools to analyze and clean mesh data. Scan data is often-times imperfect, meaning there might be holes and imperfections in the data that you'll be scratching your head on how to fix. The ExScan software and SolidEdge does have a toolkit for fixing meshes but it is not as extensive or automatic as the tools in Geomagic Essentials. You will save a lot of time with the full Scan to CAD process with Geomagic Essentials in between, not to mention it is much more effective at working with large-sized files. The standard CAD software suites such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, etc. tend to have problems with large-sized mesh files.

There are two ways Geomagic Essentials help with reverse engineering. If your focus is on solid modeling you can use GE to extract CAD data (surfaces and solids) and curve data (wire-frame geometry) from triangular meshes (scan data). The region and feature extraction toolkit will help you extract faces or bounded surfaces and export into an IGES or STP format. The curve drawing tools will help you extract wire-frame geometry and export to IGES format. These two datasets along with the scan file is essential for a reverse engineering workflow. The NURBS surfacing tool also helps create a lightweight CAD model that you can export to an STP file for SolidWorks. This is especially helpful if your focus is on free-form modeling because you can freely manipulate the surface data in Geomagic and most CAD programs.

Having such powerful tools at your disposal, you will be in a strong position to execute complex projects.
