The Shining 3D Einstar is a compact handheld 3D scanner providing professional-grade quality scans at an affordable price. The device uses white structured light combined with the infrared VCSEL technology, the latter being extremely useful for face scanning. Thanks to the built-in RGB camera, the Einstar is capable of making full-color scans, and its three IR VCSEL projectors together with two stereo depth cameras ensure flawless outdoor performance even in bright light.
The scanner boasts high-resolution accurate scans and fast acquisition speed. The flexible working distance allows scanning items of different sizes in object or portrait modes. The latter also includes the hair mode for better hair capturing. The ergonomic design and weight of only 500 grams ensure comfortable operation, and the intuitive controls and software provide smooth 3D scanning experience even for beginners.
Due to its hybrid light source and variable object size, the Einstar can be used for numerous applications, such as 3D printing, design, digital archiving, education, culture and art, VR and AR, and others. The affordable price and ease of use make it the number one choice for consumer applications.
The recommended object size for this scanner is between 30 and 300 cm.

The resolution provided by the Einstar varies depending on the selected scanning mode. In the portrait mode the point distance is 0.2–3 mm. The object mode allows you to create point clouds with a point distance of 0.1–0.5 mm for small objects and 0.2–3 mm for larger parts. The scanner is able to create accurate scans at an impressive speed, yielding professional-grade results.
Before starting to scan, the user selects either a portrait or an object mode. The portrait mode is meant for face scanning and uses the infrared laser (VCSEL technology) — eye-safe and invisible — so that the light does not “blind” the person being scanned. In the object mode, you indicate the object size, choosing between small (from 50 x 50 x 50 mm up to 200 x 200 x 200 mm) and large (more than 200 x 200 x 200 mm) options.
The Einstar offers four alignment methods to choose from — namely, feature, hybrid, texture, or global markers modes, the latter being available only in the object mode.
The Einstar’s effective working distance of 160–1400 mm allows it to effectively capture both small and large objects, starting from the minimum size of 50 x 50 x 50 mm. With the recommended working distance of 400 mm, the field of view of the Einstar is 434 x 379 mm.
Before the first use, you need to connect the Einstar to the computer via the USB cable and complete the calibration process, following the EXStar software prompts. Once you’ve calibrated the position and the white balance for color capturing, you can proceed with scanning by pressing the button on the top back side of the scanner. Before the scanning process starts, you will see the preview which allows you to adjust the scanning distance and exposure if necessary.
The Einstar features the detail-oriented enhancement technology which optimizes the point cloud, while the data quality indicator provides you with the real-time view of the areas that do not have enough scanning data yet.
The Einstar comes with the proprietary EXStar software, which is a complete solution for 3D scanning and data processing. It provides advanced options for post-processing, including mesh editing functions, such as mesh optimization, auto and manual hole filling, cutting plane tool, texture remapping, and more.
