Ultimaker S5 3D Printer

The Ultimaker S5 is a professional FDM 3D printer. Simple to set up and operate, it shows a robust, fully enclosed design that provides printing accuracy and repeatability. The machine adopts dual-extrusion print heads running over a large print bed of 330 x 240 x 300 mm. It allows for multi-material printing with either standard and water-soluble filaments. In 2017, Volkswagen Autoeuropa saved over €250,000 with the help of 3D printing. The image above shows a wheel protection jig that used to cost €800. With the help of Ultimaker S5, this was reduced to €21. Tool development time decreased from 56 to 10 days.

Before: making a plaster dental model by hand was highly labor-intensive, each iteration took from 3 to 5 hours to create.

After: with the Ultimaker S5 multiple iterations can be 3D printed at the same time. The overall process takes from 2 to 4 hours and minimizes labor.

Print quality

The Ultimaker S5 can print layers at 20 microns delivering exceptional quality. This way you can produce parts with smooth exterior surfaces and accurate details.

The printer is compatible with various nozzle diameters. Depending on your project requirements, you can equip it with a 0.8, a 0.4 or a 0.25 mm nozzle. For example, if you are looking for fine details, choosing a smaller diameter will be the right solution to achieve your goal. If you need to print fast no matter for the final accuracy, then go for a 0.8 mm nozzle.

The machine adopts a Bowden dual-extrusion system with a light print head for fast print traveling. 

Smart Dual Extrusion. Forget about stringing

Ultimaker's dual extrusion system enables printing with two materials or colors at once. It allows producing complex parts by adding easy removable supports made with HIPS and PVA, reducing time-consuming post-processing operation.

The extrusion system features a nozzle-lifting mechanism that automatically lifts up the idle nozzle to reduce stringing and unwanted drops of filament on the final model. 

Materials

Thanks to its effective extruder and interchangeable print cores, Ultimaker S5 can print with a variety of filaments, including PLA, Tough PLA, Nylon, ABS, CPE, CPE+, PC, TPU 95A, PP, PVA, and other materials.

Each print core has been optimized for printing with specific types of filament, namely: 

• the AA core works with standard materials such as PLA, ABS, etc. 
• the BB core works with dissolvable support materials such as PVA, HIPS, etc.
• the CC core works with abrasive materials like NylonX and NylonG.

In addition, the extruder comes with a fan for cooling the model. By chilling the print, it reduces warping, stringing and, generally, makes for higher quality results when printing with PLA-type materials.

Unlike many FDM printers, the Ultimaker S5 has both an enclosed chamber and a heated print bed. That’s why it can reliably print with ABS-type materials.

The Ultimaker S5 prints with any type of 2.85 mm filament. Indeed, its open material system supports all 3rd party filaments available on the market, providing you with a wide choice of materials.

Build volume

The build area of 13 x 9.4 x 11.8 inches (330 x 240 x 300 mm) lets you comfortably print almost anything in one go, without slicing and then reassembling the model.

Printer controls

The award-winning touchscreen provides a simplified user-experience enabling easy navigation and management. It features step-by-step instructions for an enhanced 3D printing experience.

3D models can be printed from computer via Wi-Fi, LAN Ethernet or USB. 

The built-in camera provides a real-time preview of the printing progress keeping you updated. The Ultimaker mobile app constantly informs you about the print status wherever you are.

The printer works with the Ultimaker Cura software. The program works with 3D models in STL, OBJ, X3D and 3MF formats. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
