The Aliengo is a high-performance quadruped robotic dog designed by the Chinese-based Unitree Robotics company. The robot boasts incredible stability even on rough terrain, can walk up and down the stairs, and features an impressive battery life of up to 4.5 hours on a single charge. The durable body of the Aliengo is made of environmentally friendly polymer, carbon fiber, and aviation aluminum.
The Unitree Aliengo has a maximum walking speed of 1.5 m/s, and its 12 joints with high-performance servo motors and full 3-axis position control allow it to perform a wide range of movements, such as jumping, crawling, squatting, rolling over, backflipping, and more. In case of a jolt, the robot is able to immediately regain stability. The fuselage of the robot is designed to resist impact from a collision or fall.
The Unitree Aliengo has 3 joints per each leg powered by 12 high-performance motors. The motors weigh about 900 g, have a maximum torque of 40 Nm and a rotational speed of 26.5 rad/s, and can be controlled separately by the user.
Two Intel RealSense D435 wide-angle depth cameras and a visual odometer open wide opportunities for the use of V-SLAM technology. The cameras allow the robot to get the color and depth information and create a 3D map of the environment with the real-time positioning and navigation planning function. The robot is capable of dynamic obstacle perception allowing it to refresh the map data according to the object relocation.
Another function of the Aliengo, provided by the cameras, is human posture and face recognition. The robot recognizes specific postures of a person and can make corresponding movements. It is also capable of a specified object tracking, focusing on a particular gesture (the left hand up, for example), even if there are other people nearby. As long as the Aliengo recognizes different human postures, you can use gesture control to operate the robot.
The Aliengo has three outputs for 5 V, 12 V, and 19 V for optional equipment connection, such as a 2D or 3D lidar, a robotic arm, a surveillance camera, and others. It also features a 25~30 V external power input.
The robot boasts wide connectivity options including 2 HDMI ports, 2 USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port, 2 Ethernet ports, and an RS-485 port. It is operated via a Bluetooth controller.
The Aliengo comes with a dual main controller featuring the perception control unit, namely the NVIDIA TX2 board with 8 GB of RAM, and the motion control unit. The system runs on the Ubuntu 16.04 open source platform and provides wide opportunities for secondary development. Unitree Robotics offers a number of SDKs with ROS, C / C++, or Python support as well as simulation tools for application development without the physical hardware.
Due to its stability on different terrain types and excellent mobility, the Unitree Aliengo can be used for inspection of potentially hazardous environments in petrochemical and other industries.
It can also help in rescue operations.
Thanks to the ability of map creation and autonomous navigation, the Aliengo can perform security patrol functions.
With the maximum payload of 10 kg and long battery life, the robot can be used for delivery service.
The Aliengo quadruped robot can become a perfect companion for all family members, especially for children. It also provides powerful R&D opportunities for secondary development of various applications and can be a great educational tool.
