XYZprinting 2.0 is a compact 3D hand scanner aimed at the color digitizing of real-world objects. It is easy-to-operate and budget-friendly.

The photo shows the RGB camera lens; the infrared laser projector and infrared camera are hidden behind a one-way mirror. They don’t call this scanner portable for nothing — its weight is less than 240 g and its length is only 15.7 cm.

Manufactured by a Taiwanese company, this device comes with an Intel RealSense F200 camera. RealSense is a new family of cutting-edge hardware and software solutions. 3D scanning is one of its implementations.

The infrared camera that captures the depth of an object has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels at 30 FP, and the RGB camera that captures color information has a resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels at 40 FP. The minimum scan volume is 50 х 50 х 50 mm; the maximum scan volume is, in round numbers, 1 x 1 x 2 m.

XYZscan Handy


Prior to scanning, a user must install the software — the 3D-objects scanner assistant tool XYZscan Handy.

The minimum PC hardware requirements are: the 4th generation Intel Core i5 processor or more and 4GB of RAM. Works only with Windows 10 and macOS 10.10 and onwards.

The manufacturer warns that this software does not support devices with Intel® RealSense™ Scan module built-in and Scan Windows Surface Tablets.

Software XYZscan Handy is a versatile tool, which not only streamlines the process of scanning, but also helps users process the digital model. It allows users to carry out measurements and edit models, manually removing unwanted parts and tuning color settings.

The same software provides an opportunity to save the generated point cloud in one of the standard 3D formats. Depending on the way the digital model will be used later on, the user is offered .STL, .OBJ, .PLY or .FBX.


Intel RealSense SDK


We should mention one more software package, which fits XYZprinting 3D Hand Scanner 2.0 even better than the standard one.

It is called Intel RealSense SDK — the software system including a 3D scanning app, which is extremely easy-to-operate. This app has a number of additional features, like the opportunity to save an .OBJ file with a separate texture map as a .PNG file. Process of Scanning

XYZprinting 3D Hand Scanner 2.0 requires a permanent wired connection to a laptop. The scanner plugs into your computer via a USB cable and the software offers you to choose one of the four modes: you can scan an object, a full body, a human head or only a face.

In order to switch between the modes and start/stop scanning, you can use the software interface or the button on the scanner’s body.

The operating principle of XYZprinting 3D Hand Scanner is common for this type of device: a user points the scanner at an object and walks around it smoothly until its entire surface is scanned. A laptop is used as a control unit: on its screen, you can see the scanning process in a real-time mode.

The recommended distance from the device to the target is 30 - 50 cm. Requirements and guidelines for different scanning modes may vary considerably. For example, when you scan a head you should start from the most outward part in a particular view angle. When scanning a full body the operator must move the scanner as slowly as possible. In the Face mode, there is a stylized Mask about the size of a human face, which simplifies the process of scanning.

It’s worth noting that an operator should hold the scanner horizontally with a left hand and move around the target in a clockwise direction; this may be not convenient for users, as most of them are right-handed.

“For $200 this is an amazing tool. It's got a resolution of about 1-2 mm which means all your scans will be lumpy. Do NOT buy this is you don't understand 3D scanning and don't have your own modeling software (I use Lightwave 3D Modeler).

I got this to scan car parts so I can model fixtures and fittings. All I needed was the rough contours to base my model on. For that it's perfect. Out of interest I scanned the grandkids and printed them with no post-processing (image attached). It's pretty close in quality to a $100k scanner circa 2000.

If all you need to do is capture contours to use the data for reference. This is a superb tool. If you're expecting to scan anything smaller than a head and need more than 2mm resolution you're going to need to spend a lot more money,” — says Richard Allinson.
